Minneapolis WordCamp 2013

Last weekend I spoke at WordCamp Minneapolis. Since I love public speaking, I felt this was a great way to broaden my horizons. But I brought home a new excitement for my business. As a small business owner there are times when I find myself stuck in a rut. There are days when I get caught up in the day-to-day aspect of running my business. I do get out and meet with chamber members a few times a month and meet new clients, but I don’t often step back and just look at what I do as a whole.

WordCamp Lessons

wordcamp minneapolis 2013Speaking at a conference this size put some life back into the job I love. With speakers from Las Vegas, Minneapolis, and Chicago, my biggest fear was if a small town developer had anything of value to share with others. But I found common ground with many of the speakers and discovered it’s not who you know, where you’re from, or how much you make. Instead it’s about a community of developers helping each other be the best we can be and still be unique.

From pink hair, to sleeve tattoos, to a small town developer – everyone has their own way of doing things and their own way of giving back to the community as a whole.

Sure, there was a lot of technical info learned and a lot of new ideas to mesh into future sites. But for me, what made Minneapolis WordCamp an awesome experience was the lesson of unique individuality, mixed with community togetherness, sprinkled with the chance to meet new friends.

I’m looking forward to WordCamp Milwaukee and WordCamp Chicago!
